‘flower aunty’.”

If you need a light snack after all that shopping, head for the family-run business, Shah’s Fast Foods, for a variety of savoury snacks, including samoosas, spring rolls, moons and mini-pies.

Kasturi Shah, 50, of Northdale, said the business had been operating for the past 25 years, and all the savouries are home-made, some using unique family recipes.

They also offer a range of samoosa dips and pickles, including mint chutney, carrot and vegetable and crushed chillies, priced between R16 and R18 per bottle.

“My in-laws started off selling samoosas at the market, and after a while, they went on to increase the variety of snacks and textures. Today, our fillings include cheese and mushroom, jalapeno and cheese, butter chicken and spicy chicken. People love them and always come back for more. By noon, we are often sold out.”

She continued: “Business is still great as we have people that support us and we are also asked to make special orders, which we sell from home.”

Shah said the market held fond memories for the family. “More so because you meet people from all walks of life.”

There are other stallholders selling handbags, clothing and DVDs and electronics.

If you are looking for a new shopping experience, then make your way to the Debi Place Market.
