Make it personal this year

- LATOYA NEWMAN

IF YOU’RE looking for a special kind of Diwali gift this year, you might want to consider a growing trend – giving personalised gifts.

On social media items like personalised candles and display plates have been gaining in popularity.

Arashna Maharaj from Exqzit Eastern Boutique said: “We have been doing specialised gifting for the past three years and the popularity has increased as consumers look for unusual items with a personalised touch.”

Among these are personalised Diwali-themed candles which they have made locally in a variety of sizes.

“The items are not readymade – each one is personally made for a client. The customer can choose to have a picture and message of their choice printed on the candle.”

She explained that display plates are also in demand: “There are two types: gold trim plates (10 inch and

8 inch) and plain white plates of the same sizes. Once again this is personalised as per the customer’s requirements.”

Diwali-themed wooden boxes are on trend this year.

“The boxes are made to order. We have someone locally who manufactures these. Designs are machine-printed on to the box,” said Maharaj.

Belgium chocolate is also a trendy offering this year: “The box is made of plain Belgium chocolate and contains four white paisley chocolates coloured like flames inside it.

“The chocolate box is 8cm all round and 6cm in depth.”
