Local soccer heats up

THE Safa Tongaat’s Junior Futsal KO Cup finals was played at the Tongaat Sports Centre on Saturday and Belchester FC was the outstandin­g team across the divisions.

Participat­ing in the under 11, 13, 15 and 17 division finals, Belchester gave a good account of themselves on each occasion.

Their U11’s team kicked off proceeding­s by beating Belvedere FC in a tense penalty shootout. The attack-minded All Stars were Belchester’s opponents in the U13 final, but lost 4-1. Belchester won the tightly contested U15 final against Supersport Eagles 2-1. Their U17’s strode to an easy 4-1 win against Belvedere.

The Safa Phoenix staged the quarter-final round of their Senior FA Cup at the Saccharine Sports Grounds on Sunday.

In the first match of the day, Division 1 side Clayfield Sporting beat Premier League opponents Touch 5 FC 4-3 on penalties. In the all-Division 1 affair, Foresthave­n beat Phoenix Aces 3-0. Division 2 side Phoenix Sporting progressed to the next round by beating Division 1 outfit Starwood Boys 2-1. In the last semi, Cambellsto­wn United (Division 1) got the better of Premier League opponents Coronation on penalties (4-2).

The semis will be played at the same venue on Thursday. Foresthave­n will play Clayfield at 7pm and at 8.15pm Cambellsto­wn are set to face Phoenix Sporting.

In Friday’s Over 35 KO Cup semi-finals at the same venue, Cambellsto­wn will play Rainham (7pm) and Young Clydes will take on Faith FC (8.15pm).
