Isipingo junior soccer games kick off

- DHIRSHAN GOBIND

EXCITEMENT is building up in Isipingo with the news that a community-driven initiative, which is set to re-ignite junior football, begins this week.

The focus of the initiative will be on girls and boys aged between six and 17, who would ultimately be eligible to play club football.

The campaign to resuscitate football in Isipingo is being spearheaded by Isipingo football stalwart Ronnie Vengan, together with a local school sports organiser Kamal Singh, who has served junior school football and mini-cricket with distinction for over two decades.

Vegan and Singh, together with other volunteers from their community, are part of the Junior Football Team Formation Committee, which they hope would spark the rebirth of football in Isipingo.

Singh has been elected the committee chairperson, Vengan will serve as the public relations officer, and Mikki Devlal is secretary.

Their mission to form teams will commence at 10am on Saturday at Kamalinee Primary School in Lotus Park, Isipingo.

Vengan said the growing call from parents and children for organised football in Isipingo couldn’t be ignored.

“Football is in my DNA. I had retired from active football administration, but after communicating with many parents I decided to promote this cause,” said Vengan, who has served Isipingo football for over 50 years.

Vengan said he believes children need healthy doses of sport and education to live balanced lives.

They anticipate a good response from the community and the day’s activities will conclude with a football match.
