Traders told to leave revamped centre

- CHANELLE LUTCHMAN

TRADERS who have been operating from carts since the Chatsworth Centre opened its doors 29 years ago, have until today to pack their belongings and vacate the premises.

Since the centre’s recent revamp, three of the six tenants claim they were shown drawings of the kiosks that would replace their carts. But instead of their small businesses being upgraded, they were issued with eviction letters.

The centre’s portfolio manager, Keeran Govender, said discussions were held in June and they were asked to come up with proposals for the kiosks.

“We requested all kiosk owners to submit a business plan and clearly state their intended use of the kiosk by July 2. Out of six operators, we received three that we were satisfied with.”

The three aggrieved tenants were issued with letters in the middle of last month advising that their proposals were declined and why.

“They were advised that their last day of trade would be October 31.”

The tenants voiced their concerns at a meeting at the Nelson Mandela Youth Centre in Chatsworth on Monday.

Badrun Nisha Russel, 65, who sells toys, cosmetics and bags, said: “Now when it comes to reaping the rewards of the new building, we are asked to leave. I have no idea what’s going to happen. How am I going to provide for my family?”

Magen Pillay said his dad, 65, who sells cosmetics, toys and jewellery, had taken ill since receiving the letter, while Mariam Bibi Sheik said it was going to be difficult.

The chairperson of the centre’s tenants association, Arthur Pallium, said: “A lot of the traders have been here for years and built relationships with customers. It’s sad to see them go.”
