Red rivalry takes centre stage

- BYRON DAVID

AND then there was one! After 16 match-days in the English Premier League, only Liverpool are unbeaten. This, after Chelsea beat Manchester City 2-0 to go a point behind the log-leading Merseysiders.

It’s heating up near the summit as City host Everton on Saturday. Chelsea are seven points away from second place and travel to Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday.

Arsenal are fifth and would want nothing but the win against Southampton, a fixture they haven’t lost in, in the last five encounters.

Tottenham will sit in third position should they beat Burnley on Saturday.

This weekend’s fixtures will end in a bang at Anfield when old rivals clash. It’s a fixture that’s circled in red on the calendar of both sets of supporters and ironically it falls on the Day of Reconciliation here in South Africa. There won’t be any reconciliation when Liverpool host Manchester United. The new log leaders have not beaten United in their previous five attempts.

However, Liverpool are in sublime form and particularly Mo Salah. The Egyptian netted a hattrick last week against Bournemouth in their 4-0 victory. United also found form after they scored four against Fulham. Marcus Rashford seems to be hitting his straps, while Romelu Lukaku scored in what seems like an age. When this fixture comes around, the rest of the world stops for 90 minutes. It will be no different this time.
