Call for BEE to be scrapped

-

ONCE the elections are over and done with, the government should seriously review the scrapping of the Black Empowerment Equity (BEE) policy.

When BEE was implemented 25 years ago, it was an absolute necessity but has now served its purpose and should be scrapped if government is serious about reviving the economy and creating jobs.

If one has to look at all government departments, both at national and provincial level, one would observe that the majority of employees are black. This is a similar situation in commerce at businesses such as banks, supermarkets etc, which tells us BEE has worked.

Unfortunately, this empowerment policy turned into a monster when cadre deployment kicked in.

This has resulted in many government departments deploying useless individuals who have retarded progress.

Typical examples are the failed municipalities, which has resulted in widespread service delivery protests.

One can understand the frustration of the people, who I am certain would not mind which race group the mayors, city managers, etc, are from, as long as they are competent to undertake their duties to the best of their abilities instead being corrupt and intent on looting.

The current BEE situation has replaced the hated “job reservation” policy by the then Nationalist government during the apartheid era, whereby plum jobs were reserved for whites only.

South Africa belongs to all who live in it and its people must be given a fair chance to move this country forward.

BEE should be scrapped.
