Bringing God closer

- CHARLENE SOMDUTH charlene.somduth@inl.co.za

FOR those observing the Daniel Fast, it is a time to reflect on the Biblical scriptures and draw closer to God.

Congregants abstain from meat and other luxuries, and maintain a vegetarian diet for 21 days.

Brenda Govindsamy said fasting at the beginning of the year brought her peace and helped her grow spiritually. “It is a time for me to get closer to God and while praying, I ask Him to direct my life for the year ahead. I have been doing the fast for the last 15 years but for the past seven years during the fast, I don’t eat anything except for drinking liquids. This is my sacrifice to thank God for all that He has done for me.” Vineshree Velayudam said the fast helped her get closer to God. “I use this fast to reflect on His word and I pray for my spirit and soul to be renewed. I abstain from meat and attend services at my church for prayer and worship.”

Priscilla Naicker said the fast taught her to discipline her body. “The fast has helped me renew my mind and strengthen my faith in God. It has given me the desire and passion to have a closer walk with God. I believe through fasting and prayer God is able to reveal the plans He has for your life.”

Audrey Anderson said the fast helped her achieve a closer relationship with God. “I have learnt to have a more righteous walk with God.” Theodora Mthimkhulu said through fasting she hoped for a closer relationship for her and her son with God, and to be healed of her ailments. “I believe fasting helps you get closer to God and enables you to hear from Him so He can answer your prayers. I want to build a closer relationship with God.”
