Cousins stabbed, robbed on N2

- CANDICE SOOBRAMONEY

TWO cousins, who were returning home shortly after breaking their fast at an aunt’s Newlands West home last week, were assaulted, robbed and stabbed after their car ran out of petrol on the N2 near the Booth Road bridge.

Avinash Deonarain, 27, of Kharwastan, said he and his cousins, Roland and Shavir, both 31, who have the same surname, had visited their aunt’s house on Thursday night and remained there until around 2am, listening to music.

“I was driving Roland’s Golf 6, which he had bought about a month ago, while Shavir, who was in a BMW, followed us. As we were travelling, the car stalled because we had run out of petrol.

“We pulled off on to the side of the road, while Shavir drove to the garage to get petrol for us. Roland was asleep in the passenger seat at the time,” said Avinash.

“All of a sudden four men approached. Two stood on the passenger side and the other two on the driver’s side. They instructed us to get out. I did what I was told, but Roland was still sleeping.”

Avinash said he was punched before the men searched him and stole his cellphone and wallet.

Shoes

They also took the shoes off his feet.

He said his cousin was surprised to find the other two searching him, and because of his panic, the men probably assumed he was retaliating, and he was stabbed in the stomach.

His wallet, cellphone and shoes were also stolen before the men fled on foot.

Avinash said Shavir had met police at the garage and had told them about the car stalling.

“They followed Shavir, who then took Roland to the hospital, and they (the police) helped me refuel.”

A case of robbery and attempted murder is being investigated.
