Nasty surprise in biscuit

- MARYANNE ISAAC

A CHEAT day for a health enthusiast proved a painful experience as she bit into her “melting moments” biscuit to find what appeared to be a shard of glass.

Nisha Chandikapersad walked into the bakery of Checkers Hyper Pavilion, fascinated by freshly baked melting moments, and purchased her treat along with some doughnuts. Chandikapersad broke off pieces to nibble on and it was at the third bite that she discovered she bit into glass.

“I broke it into pieces and at the third bite I felt excruciating pain. After biting into the glass, I contacted Checkers,” she said. “The branch manager could not answer me when I asked him about the glass piece and how could they not have felt the glass when baking the mixture.”

Chandikapersad said the branch manager offered her a refund and payment of her medical bills.

“My gum is sore. I can’t eat properly due to the abrasions and I constantly experience fevers,” she said.

Checkers’ head office confirmed knowledge of the incident.

“The Checkers supermarket chain is aware of an incident in which a customer found a foreign object in a bakery product. Quality and safety of food products is of paramount importance to Checkers and a stringent investigation is currently in process to ascertain the cause of the foreign object,” a spokesperson said. “The supermarket chain is in contact with the customer and will provide feedback on conclusion of the matter.”
