Car’s window explodes

- CHARLENE SOMDUTH

AN ISIPINGO grandfather, whose car’s back window exploded while he was taking his grandchildren to school, believes hijackers have stumbled upon a new way of targeting motorists.

Selva Pillay, 61, said a flare had been attached to the back wiper blade of his Toyota Yaris without his knowledge.

Shortly after leaving home with his three grandchildren last week, they heard an explosion while travelling along Isipingo Beach.

“I initially thought another driver had hit my car but, instead of stopping, I drove on for a bit. When I got out of the vehicle, I saw a huge flame in the middle of the road.”

He said his back window was shattered and the boot was damaged.

“I got back into my car and dropped my grandchildren off at school. I returned to the scene and the flare was still ablaze.

“I waited for it to die off and picked it up. I went to the police sub-station in Prospecton and was referred to the Isipingo SAPS, where the bomb squad was called in to investigate.

“I am just glad my grandchildren and other motorists were not harmed.”

Despite the incident having taken place a week ago, Pillay said every sound still had him on edge.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Thulani Zwane said the explosive was a 305m flare. “A case of malicious damage to property is being investigated and no arrests have been made,” he said.
