Phoenix’s Fazlyn proves she has talent

- CHANELLE LUTCHMAN

TWELVE-year-old Phoenix pupil Fazlyn Naidoo knocked the socks off SA’s Got Talent judges at the weekend as she sang Down by Marion Hill, earning her the “golden buzzer” that took her straight through to the semi-finals.

Each judge is allowed to use their golden buzzer once in the season for a special act they believe in, and radio DJ Shando Twala was convinced that young Fazlyn had a beautiful gift that would take her far.

Fazlyn, of Southgate, who has been singing since before she could speak, told POST she was ecstatic when she saw the golden X from the judge.

“I was in shock to see these people saw so much talent in me and didn’t even spare a moment to think before advancing me. I intend to pull out all the stops to reach the top seven and I have since been preparing arduously for the semis,” she said.

The Grade 7 pupil, who enjoys drawing and designing, has been in the limelight since she won Phoenix Got Talent last year and performed at the Barnyard for Night of a Hundred Stars and at the Playhouse Theatre as Louisa von Trapp in the Sound of Music.

She said that when people watched her perform and found out her age, they were almost always gobsmacked.

“I always seem to amaze my audience because they cannot believe I am just 12. I am often told that I stand out and that my biggest asset is my humbleness. And they even tell me I make them happy when I sing, and that is just a great feeling for me. I believe that music has this incredible power to connect people and make them happy, so I’m probably doing something right.”

Although reaching many highs, Fazlyn believes she is just an ordinary teenager.

“I am young, confident and hard-working. I have an older brother who is studying and our parents are hard-working and committed to their children. They taught us to be humble and support us always. “We are an ordinary family and I am still a child, but I must admit it is a little busier with all the training and the shows that I participate in.”

Fazlyn’s first performance was at the age of 4.

“I remember going to Scottburgh beach after our visit to Crocworld. Beach Idols was there and I insisted on going up and singing. I was not afraid and I sang – with the help of mum of course,” she blushed.

She said her dream was to be a successful international recording artist, just like her idol, Adele.

“She (Adele) is beautiful, humble and incredibly talented. She is also funny, down-to-earth and always strives to be herself. She inspires me to keep pushing towards my goals in life. It would be incredible for me to have the opportunity to sing with her at the Grammys,” she said.

Apart from singing, Fazlyn loves collecting Top Model design books and has a huge obsession of with parentsFazlynher dream of becoming a super-star HerWe were totally surprised unicorns.by the golden buzzer.
