Keshav backs sports clean up

- Shorné Bennie

Since the success of the Talisman Protea Project and Protea Sport Park Association clean up these past two weeks, the project has now also received the support of Hollywoodbets Dolphins Captain and current Protea, Keshav Maharaj.

Speaking to Capital Newspapers, Maharaj said the initiative will be a platform for the community to discover and to improve on their sporting abilities.

“This is a great opportunity for people to become involved in sport. You never know how good you are until you are exposed to it. There are people who have the facilities and some who do not and cannot pursue a career in their favourite sport simply because they are not exposed to it. I support this initiative because, as a sportsman, I know what sports did to me and my life. Sport has kept me determined and hungry to make something of my life,” said Maharaj.

He hopes the initiative will grow into other communities and make a change in at least one individual’s life.

“I will try to get my sponsors on board to help the facility in any way they can and to create an awareness that there is a platform for the people to go out and play, and for the Pietermaritzburg community, to know that there is a center catering to everyone’s sporting needs, not just cricket.”

The third community clean up will take place this Sunday. The community is encouraged to join in. Those who attend are to meet at 7:30am at the main cricket oval (on the pitch, under the gazebo). The registration, indemnity form and attendance register must be filled. Members who arrive after 8am must complete the attendance register and indemnity form before proceeding further.

Community members are to have their own masks, sanitizers, gloves and bin bags, brooms and rakes. The community is also welcome to bring their own brush cutters and other cleaning equipment. A foot pedal hand sanitizer will be provided.
