Eastwood church’s 40th anniversary celebrated with clean-up
Congregants of Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Eastwood joined forces with members of the Makza Foundation to conduct a clean-up campaign around Eastwood on Saturday, January 28, in celebration of the church’s 40th anniversary.
Makza Foundation is a non-profit organisation that was established in August 2022 by Sandile Manana. He also serves as the CEO and together with chairperson Nonhlanhla Zingela, ensures that the environment in which people live is safe and clean.
Merlyn Taylor, chairperson of the church’s finance committee, told Public Eye that the objective of the clean-up campaign was to promote unity as a community by working together to overcome the challenges of waste management.
“The environmental clean-up campaign began at 7:00am and finished at 3:30pm. Approximately 30 people from both the church and Makza volunteered their time to spruce up the area. The clean-up operation targeted the busy areas of Eastwood where people spend most of their time,” Taylor said.
The clean-up began at the Saint Francis of Assisi Eastwood Catholic Church, swept along Kingfisher Road towards the Eastwood Service Centre, the Eastwood swimming pool, the Eastwood library and ended at the Eastwood car park.
Participants from the Makza Foundation played an important role in the success of the clean-up. They were provided with cleaning equipment such as gloves, spades, waste plastics and gumboots.
Manana said that when they saw an update on social media that Eastwood residents were planning to conduct a clean-up, the organisation saw an opportunity to join in, as they are an organisation that is committed to ensuring a habitable environment.
The clean-up was a great success and the waste collected was taken to the Eastwood dump site.
The organisers are hoping that the municipality will come along and play its part in keeping the area clean.
