Fund raising Nagara Night for child suffering from cancer

- Shorne Bennie

The local Plessislaer Arya Samaj Youth Group will be hosting a Nagara Night to raise funds for a two-year-old child, Ahana Dhanuk who was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in October last year.

Ahana, from Bluff, Durban, was diagnosed with stage four Neuroblastoma and is in desperate need of funding to receive further treatment amounting to R4 million in New York.

Ahana’s father, Aveen Dhanuk said they became concerned when they found a lump between her shoulder and spine. Ahana showed no other symptoms.

“We noticed a lump that that did not go away. We then got a ultrasound and x-ray completed but the results of that were inconclusive. Then she underwent a CT scan and we then found out that she had a tumour that started in her chest cavity and extended to spine and that is how it was protruding into her back. A week later we found out that she was at stage four, high risk,” said Dhanuk.

Dhanuk said that Ahana was given a 30 percent chance of survival. Neuroblastoma has a high possibility of relapse in those who are in remission. With this information Dhanuk said they started to look at alternate treatment, they found that there was a hospital in New York that was offering a vaccine that would drastically reduce the possibility of a relapse.

Dhanuk said that they are thankful for all the assistance they have received thus far and want to have chance at Ahana having a future.

Youth co-ordinator of the Plessislaer Arya Samaj Youth Group, Nesh Jadoo said that the youth group approached the committee with the idea of raising funds for the treatment.

The Nagara night will be held on May 4, at the Pietermaritzburg Sanathan Ved Dharam Sabha from 6 pm to 10.30 pm. Tickets are R50 each.
