Four Pietermaritzburg residents have showcased their acting prowess in the latest Broken Promises movie which will be released later this year. Shooting of the fifth instalment wrapped up recently with the four locals featuring prominently in the much-anticipated movie.

Tezanne Narraidu (20) said that acting in the movie was a childhood dream that became a reality.

Narraidu, a former Raisethorpe Secondary School pupil said she always wanted to pursue acting and saw the opportunity when she came across a video last year on Tiktok calling for people to participate in the auditions.

“Acting is something I want to pursue and I told my mother this is what I would like to do. My parents have been supportive of me pursuing the auditions and encouraged me to be positive,” said Narraidu.

Narraidu said she was shocked when she found out she was going to be a part of the movie.

“This was a full circle moment for me, I grew up watching all the Broken Promises movies and now I got to act in it,” said Narraidu.

Taryn Naidoo, a matric pupil at Raisethorpe Secondary School decided to participate in the movie after she and her sister saw the call for auditions while scrolling Tik Tok.

“Taryn and her sister were going through Tik Tok when they came across a video calling for actors for the Broken Promises movie. Her sister told her to audition as it was what she liked to do. So she sent in her audition and got through," said her mother, Deshnee Naidoo.

“There was a lot of fun on set and for me it was life-changing. I had to put myself out there. My character is very different from my personality and initially I was a little nervous but I was able to handle that feeling and then it came naturally to me. We had support from Kumaran (Naidu) and everyone on set,” said Taryn.

Deolin Perumal (32) said that due to his jovial personality and ability to make his family and friends laugh, he decided to audition for the movie.

“I have watched all the movies in the Broken Promises franchise and enjoyed all of them. When I saw the call for auditions on social media I sent through my application and then I got called for the auditions. My wife and family are very supportive of me being in the movie, as they know my personality. I love making people laugh and making people smile,” said Perumal.

Riona Rajkumar (37) a mother of two, said since acting in the movie for the second time, she had the opportunity to express her creativity.

“It was really good to work with everyone and the commitment and dedication put towards our roles in the movie allows us to appreciate, respect and admire those who are actors in the industry. I am really thankful to my husband and family who always motivate me and encourage me in all that I pursue,” said Rajkumar.

Kumaran Naidu, who wrote and directed the movie, said the movie was based on important issues affecting the community.

The movie was completed over 11 days with 275 people acting in the movie and he wanted to give an opportunity to the people who never had it before. The movie was filmed in Durban and in communities that will be relatable to the viewers.

“Broken Promises 5 is a celebration of the franchise and the people who have been watching and supporting it, so it is a movie about the people and for the people. It is a tear-jerker, comedy and drama but this time I have left out the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law drama. I hope that does not disappoint the audience this time.

“The movie features people from all walks of life from Johannesburg, Durban, Cape Town and Mpumalanga. People travelled to be in this movie and this is their passion and loyalty to the franchise. I tried my best to accommodate everyone and give them a part to say. I am really thankful to everyone who made our shoot a success, especially to my wife Fiona,” said Naidu.

Ashburton resident, trishalan Govender who is a line producer in the movie, said the movie was made in honour of his father Moonsamy Arimuthu (Stanley) Govender. He died in a tragic accident in 2019 and the movie is relatable to his father who was well-known and loved in the community.
