PORSCHE PANAMERA
Any vehicle wearing the Porsche badge is a strong contender in this type of competition, because excellence should be rewarded. While not the most elegant of Porsches, the new Panamera is now better-looking than the first iteration. Ah, and it drives impeccably; whether on track, scything through the corners displaying copious levels of grip and power, or just lazing down a tarred ribbon with its occupants in cocooned comfort. Even with prices between R1,3 and R3 million, the Panamera still offer good value for money…
SUZUKI IGNIS
The Ignis is a little jewel in its segment, standing out from the rest with its funky, slightly retro styling and practical interior. It has some quirky, but endearing features, and is well-kitted. It has a spunky motor and good handling traits – on track and on the road. However, it has some small build quality niggles, but its street-cred is backed up by great fuel economy and competitive pricing. For just under R200,000, it really is a bargain.
Our rating: 8 TOYOTA C-HR
With its bold and assertive lines, the C-HR breaks the mould of conservative, unimaginative styling that has stifled Toyota vehicles for decades. Add the carmaker’s impeccable reputation for durability, reliability, resale value and excellent build quality, and the C-HR is a strong contender. With a lively 1.2-litre engine, it performed well in testing and really shone in the handling stakes.yes, it may be slightly expensive, but it features a long list of standard equipment. This is one to watch…
Our rating: 9 VOLVO S90
The S90 has superb styling and features an array of advanced driver-aid systems, including semi-autonomous technology. But does it have enough to set it apart from its X90 counterpart, the 2016 Coty-winner, and strong competition from the 5 Series, as well as the Mercedes-benz E-class and Audi A6? Well, it drives and handles well, and its 2-litre four-cylinder engine is powerful and frugal. However, we are not sure it stands out enough for a shot at the title.
