R.E.A.L ADVENTURES

Call: 082 924 4060 Email: booking@realadventures.co.za www.realadventures.co.za to navigate, but that is just part of the fun.the river is also quite high this time of year (February) and you do not see all the rocks below the surface, which makes for some frustrating pauses.

The famous Big Boy rapid is next. This is a level 4 rapid and you have a good chance of ending up in the drink. Luckily, this time around we all manage to master the angry rapids of the Big Boy. But then it was time for the Suicide mile.this stretch of the river goes on for what feels like forever. At one point, it actually feels as though you are paddling upstream. With cramp-set hands, we let out a collective sigh of relief as the guide announces the Suicide mile is over. This sets you up for the most exciting part of the river, where you slalom through consecutive level 2 and 3 rapids. This ends a wet, fun-filled and sometimes taxing experience.

PITCHING OUR TENTS

As we leave the rapids behind, we still need to travel for about 50 minutes to Riverrun Resort, our campsite for the night. This resort is just past Vredefort on the R59, with two sections of this road having time consuming road works. About 20 km of the road to the resort is unpaved, dirt road that is not in the best condition. However, it is not completely inaccessible, as two of the vehicles were sedans.

At the resort, the green grass lay stretched out next to the river bank with the river literally on your doorstep. A real treat for any fishing fanatic. Lush green trees give you sufficient shade to enjoy a well-deserved refreshment. The stands are laid-out well with ample room between them and all on level, paved foundations.there is an electricity socket next to each camp site that works with a normal extension cord. Each stand also has a braai area.

The campsite shares one ablution block that is well-maintained and cleaned throughout the stay.the 4-year-old resort has two swimming pools, one for smaller children and the other for bigger children and the odd adult.there is a tuck shop for basic needs, and the entrainment facilities include pool tables, tubing down the river, putt-putt, walking trails, trampoline, jungle gym, fishing, and a bar area with a big screen television. But, the best features of this resort must be the full sky of stars and the soothing white noise of the river next to your camp.

FINAL THOUGHTS

The rafting experience will last for about four hours, if you splash out on the full day rafting option that is. In my experience the half-day rafting option is over in a flash and during the full day option you get to enjoy more of the river.also, I would advise that you invest in a splash bag to keep your phone dry if you want to take some photos on the way. And, gloves will help with the grip on the oar and condition of your hands.the Riverrun Resort is also a true hidden gem, and well worth a stay if you do decide to go on a Vaal river rafting expedition of your own.
