SA Jagter Hunter

A warthog and a stone

- By PETER STANNARD

In hunting, as in life, two wrongs don’t make a right.

Like most stories, the start of this one goes back to a time before the incident I’m about to tell you, took place.

A group of friends and I have been hunting together for many years, and for the past six years we have been returning to a specific farm. A senior member of our group, Denis, always takes his time when hunting and after the six-day hunt he has invariably shot his two impala, which are then butchered and packaged to his taste on the farm before we leave. On this particular hunt it was no different.

For the past number of years however, there had been a constant mix-up with the cutting and packaging of the meat. Why, I do not know. Every year Denis asks that his game carcasses be handled the same way; he wants the fillets removed and the rest of the meat finely minced, (twice) and then packaged. No biltong, no roasts, no stewing meat or wors. It couldn’t be easier. Or could it?

GETTING IT RIGHT

Last year things started smoothly and I was fortunate enough to shoot a waterbuck bull on the first day. I therefore had plenty of time to let the carcass hang for a few days and then have the meat cut up in the farm butchery as well. I discussed the matter with Denis and because my requirement was different to his, I suggested that we carefully write down exactly what we wanted done and then we would ask the staff to cut the meat when they had time. He agreed and we sat down and wrote in great detail exactly what needed to be done.

The next few days dragged by lazily whilst the rest of the group shot their quota. On the last day
