Ek verwys na julle wenbrief, Spekskieters van Corné Smith, in die Oktober 2017-uitgawe. Dit is vir my duidelik dat die skrywer nog nooit met “vandag se gewere en teleskope” te doen gehad nie anders sou hy geweet het dat hierdie toerusting enige skut in ’n Protea-skut (en ’n skut wat ’n springbok op 300m skiet) verander.

Dit gee die jagter genoeg tyd om tot binne sy skietafstandvermoë te bekruip, ’n boom te vind wat hom drie ankerpunte verskaf en selfs vorentoe te stap om lastige takkies of blare te verwyder. Met dié toerusting kan jy klawergroeperings heeldag lank skiet. Eengat-groeperings is kinderspeletjies. Dit raak eintlik so vervelig op die skietbaan dat die ouens doelbewus klawergroeperings skiet omdat dit meer uitdagend is as eengat-groeperings.

Dit is vir my duidelik dat die ouens wat die skietbaan so toepak, nog met “gister se gewere en teleskope” woel. Hulle soek naarstigtelik na ’n wenlading, hoe om ’n geweer reg vas te hou, hoe om asemhaling te beheer en ’n horde ander goeters wat keer dat ’n koeël dwaal op pad teiken toe. Kry vir julle “vandag se gewere en teleskope” en julle kan ook met sulke foto’s op julle selfone rondloop! Maak net seker dat die geweer wat jy koop nog nie verby sy verkoopsdatum is nie. ALL ABOUT ETHICS

Although not a hunter, I value and respect the role that hunters play in our wildlife industry. In your August edition Eugene Harmse put forward the case for long-range hunting. The message which I took from this interesting letter is that it is not so much what you do as how you do it which determines the ethical acceptability of the hunt. We learn that responsible hunting validates the type of hunt which is conducted.

In his article Die winsgewende dood van etiek, Herman Jonker explained how the introduction of financial gain into the equation led to accepted ethics being disregarded. I appreciate the analysis of ethics being placed on the table for scrutiny as this stimulates thought about what constitutes acceptable ethics. It seems to me that visibly durable and compelling ethical standards are the best defence which hunters have against the arguments of the significant groups of detractors.

I have a concern about a different, although related issue of ethical hunting. Eco parks, residential parks where residents can enjoy the aesthetic pleasures of having wild game roaming around their residences, have been in existence in South Africa now for over twenty years and are widely spread around the country. Since most parks do not include large predators, the time has already dawned for the culling of excess animals in the parks. The question is how this should be achieved. Some parks use professional hunters to cull surplus game, others capture the surplus animals and sell them to game breeding operations, others chase the animals into neighbouring hunting farms where they are hunted and others allow hunting on the park itself. This last alternative is obviously the most lucrative, but is it ethical?

I am interested in hearing the views of SAHGCA and its members on this issue. Just to mention a few questions on my mind: Capturing and transporting game is expensive. Does this justify hunting on the park? Which method(s) of culling are regarded as ethical? What about safety issues on hunting in the park, especially if an animal is wounded? Is professional supervision by way of a veterinarian and/or professional hunter required for any of the cull methods? How can the competency of a hunter be established for the specific application? Is ‘bakkie’ hunting regarded as ethical? Is it ethical to hunt the semi-tame game, either on the park itself or on a neighbouring farm? Does the size of the park affect the ethics? How can the park ensure that only the desired animals are hunted? If a professional hunter is employed, could the carcasses be marketed? I am sure that I am not the only person grappling with this dilemma and finding an acceptable protocol should be of interest to all of us. TREVOR SPARKS

Gereeld kla jagters in jagtydskrifte oor die onaangename ervarings wat hulle gehad het tydens jagtogte, hetsy oor probleme met die verblyf of selfs die behandeling wat hulle van jagplaaseienaars ontvang.

As veteraan in die jagbedryf, wil ek graag die volgende met lesers deel:

In die aanloop tot die 2017jagseisoen bespreek Jacques van der Westhuyzen ’n Augustus-jag vir ’n groep van 22 jagters by my en my vrou. Ons stem in, wetende dat dit baie goeie beplanning en voorbereiding sou verg om so ’n groot groep te akkommodeer.

Op 16 Augustus arriveer 10 jagters, en 12 die volgende dag. Dié wat gewere wil inskiet, doen so en Fransua Reyneke, wat al die logistieke reëlings getref het, rapporteer dat die manne uitstekend skiet. Ek het met ’n vriend van my gereël dat sommige van die jagters by hom sal jag.

Om ’n lang, lekker storie kort te maak: Drie dae later hang daar 25 stuks wild in die koelkamer, drie skote agter die blad en die res almal kop- en nekskote – nie ’n enkele mis- of kwesskoot nie! Merkwaardig!

Voeg hierby dat my vrou, wat maar baie bekommerd was of die kamp aan al die vereistes gaan voldoen, kon sê dat die kamp so skoon en netjies nagelaat is dat dit net so vir ’n volgende groep gebruik kon word, en geen breek- of ander skade is aangemeld nie.
