DEPUTY EDITOR SA JAGTER/ HUNTER MAGAZINE, GAUTENG

SA JAGTER/HUNTER magazine has a vacancy for a deputy editor. The successful candidate will be based in our Gauteng office in Pretoria. Given the employment equity policy of Media24, preference will be given to suitable candidates from the designated groups.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES: • Manage and liaise with writers (internal and external) on all editorial aspects • Generate and develop story ideas that are relevant to the target market • Oversee the commission and management of features • Source articles and conceptualise editorial ideas • Write articles on a variety of topics in line with the magazine’s style • Evaluate and edit features to ensure they are in line with content, tone and style of the magazine • Assist the editor in compiling articles and content for the magazine • Communicate clear briefs to contributors and manage content to completion • Represent the magazine at events that falls within the magazine’s ambit • Participate in and contribute to strategic planning • Assist the Editor in implementing editorial policy and strategic vision of the brand • Ensure that the brand operate within editorial budgets COMPETENCY REQUIREMENTS AND EXPERIENCE • At least five years’ experience in a writing or magazine environment • A real passion for the media industry • A working knowledge of Microsoft Office • The ability to work overtime when deadlines demand it • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills • Knowledge of SA JAGTER/HUNTER’s market and the ability to translate this knowledge into compelling editorial content • Outstanding English and Afrikaans language skills -must be able to edit and write articles in both these languages • A technical knowledge of and interest in the relevant subject matter (game animals, hunting, firearms – especially hunting rifles, shotguns and handguns suitable for hunting – optical products such as telescopes and any other products relevant to hunting) • Good photography skills (familiar with SLR-type cameras and be able to take quality photos)
