SA designer’s new collection is dedicated to saving the rhino

SOUTH African designer Gert-Johan Coetzee is adding his voice to those of global conservationists by dedicating his new collection for SA Fashion Week to Africa’s iconic, endangered species.

Rhino Awareness Day is on Thursday, the day after Coetzee reveals his new Autumn/ Winter 2017 collection in Joburg.

“Around 702 South African rhinos have already been killed this year by poachers and 100 elephants slaughtered for their ivory in Africa. We have a responsibility to the next generation to preserve our natural heritage,” says Coetzee.

The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (Cites) is also kicking off in Joburg next weekend, focusing global attention on the trade in wildlife.

“Rhinos are the only animals who need rhino horn, and ivory should only be a colour, not something elephants are slaughtered for,” he adds.

This is why he chose a colour palette of black and ivory along with rose gold for his new collection, which also in- cludes animal print and strong African influences.

In a South African first, the designer is inviting his fans from all over South Africa and the globe to watch the showcase live on Instagram.

“Space for guests at Fashion Week is extremely limited and I’ve always wished I could accommodate everyone who asks for a ticket.

“So this year everybody is invited to join us at 3pm on Instagram – @gertjohancoetzee – where we’ll post each look as it happens… a front-row seat for everybody.”

The new collection will include a combination of the popular designer’s coveted red-carpet showstoppers, cocktail couture and more accessible ready-to-wear garments for his online retail range.

Inspired by the femininity of a bygone era, the range has a vintage feel, subtly sexy that celebrate the curviness of South African women, flowing lines and delicate lace detail.

Gert-Johan Coetzee will present his Autumn/Winter 2017 collection at the Four Seasons Westcliff Hotel on Wednesday as part of SA Fashion Week.
