‘No right way to play jazz – just keep it honest’

- PETER FELDMAN

AMERICAN jazz musician Bob James says he is influenced by South Africa’s varied music.

“I am always inspired to listen and learn.”

James, 76, has found his numerous trips here enriching and is “happy” to be performing at the Standard Bank Joy of Jazz Festival this week.

The two-time Grammy Award- winning keyboardist, arranger and producer is recognised as a founder of smooth jazz and renowned for the complexity of his arrangements.

Asked what fans could expect to hear him play, he says: “I try to play the songs associated with me, but I also like to surprise fans… I hope to play a few songs that are new and not yet available.”

Music is James’s life. “It’s my passion, my hobby, my exercise, my relaxation. I never tire of trying to keep getting better, dig deeper to capture the emotions that give me energy.”

James laughs when it is suggested his group, Fourplay’s 25th album, Silver, was recorded in an “old school” style.

“I guess all my work is ‘old school’ these days. Actually it was put together like all our recent releases. We work separately at home… then we come together in the studio and strive to play the basic performance with a ‘live’ energy.

“After that we let the song dictate how much production we add. With my song Horace it was definitely old school – no enhancements, just the quartet vibe.”

James says he is fortunate to have lived through many stylistic changes in jazz.

“I believe in moving forward, and respect the jazz artists who are influenced by what is going on around them in the world.

“I don’t believe there is a correct way to play jazz.

“It is spontaneous, improvised, and the most honest music that speaks to me reflects the present and the future, with a nod of respect to the past.”

His latest project is completing his first piano concerto. “It took more than two years of preparation, but was a great learning experience.”

Asked what advice he would give budding musicians, he says tersely: “Don’t do it… those who are afraid should heed my advice.

“Those who are talented enough, brave enough, stubborn enough, crazy enough, and dedicated enough will not be deterred…

“It is those few who have a decent chance to succeed and be happy.”
