Defiant Hlaudi refuses to budge

- SIYABONGA MKHWANAZI

SABC CHIEF operating officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng has remained defiant, saying no one will decide his future.

Motsoeneng’s open defiance of the court judgment came at the same time that President Jacob Zuma urged him to respect the Supreme Court of Appeal judgment.

Motsoeneng warned his critics yesterday that he would continue to deliver at the SABC, no matter what position he occupies.

But Zuma did not tell Motsoeneng to back off from clinging to his position of COO at the SABC.

Zuma said he made an undertaking with the judiciary last year that the government would respect the decisions of the courts. But Motsoeneng re- mained defiant as he spoke at the funeral of kwaito star Mandoza in Soweto yesterday. This is in complete breach of the ruling of the Supreme Court of Appeal.

SABC spokesman Kaizer Kganyago could not be reached for comment.

Motsoeneng is known to be close to Zuma, though the president urged him to respect the SCA judgment.

The SABC board has tried to circumvent the court decision by reinstating him as acting COO for the next three months.

“The Presidency has noted and respects the judgment of the Supreme Court of Appeal with regard to the position of the chief operating officer of the SABC,” said Zuma’s spokesman Bongani Ngqulunga.
