Lira’s reconciliation message: let go of the anger

- NONI MOKATI

SINGER Lira grew up angry – angry with everyone – but she’s put it all behind her since letting go of the injustices she felt subjected to as a black child.

It’s in the spirit of unity and promoting peace in the country that the award-winning singer will perform at the inaugural Reconciliation Festival at Carnival City next Saturday in celebration of music and to promote social cohesion and nation-building. Lira, 37, admits it’s not easy to forgive in a country where racism is rife. “I was that angry young person. angry at everyone. But my freedom came when I let go of that anger,” she says. She recently posted a picture of herself with friends at a white singer’s concert, which prompted a fan to write on her page: “I detest Lira because she’s always friendly with whites.”

“I couldn’t believe my eyes,” she exclaims.

The Feel Good hit-maker maintains her greatest inspiration is former president Nelson Mandela.

“We could have had a bloodbath. But in doing what he did, we’re enjoying the freedom and success we have today.”

Lira says on every Reconciliation Day she makes a point of performing with love and positivity. This year will be no different, even though it will be at a new festival.

Richard Ramudzuli of Thiko events said: “We’ve picked Ekurhuleni, which means ‘peace’, as the launch venue to magnify the point of peace.”

Among other artists on the bill are Micasa, Afrosoul musician Zahara, and RnB and soul singer Zonke. Tickets for the event are available at Computicket at R200 to R350.
