IT HAS been a significant couple of weeks for African low-cost airline fastjet. With a string of announcements, route launches and awards, the airline has been making headlines across the continent.

This week the carrier earned its second World Travel Award as the leading African low-cost airline in as many years with Skytrax’s World Airline Awards recognising fastjet as Africa’s best low-cost airline in June.

Fastjet also announced two brand licensing agreements, one of which already saw the airline launch a Mozambican domestic schedule on Thursday. Mozambican routes include flights between Maputo and Beira, Maputo and Nampula, and Maputo and Tete. The first flight in Mozambique takes off on November 3.

Fastjet’s network now includes Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and South Africa with recently increased frequencies between Joburg and Harare as well as the relaunch of its Joburg-Victoria Falls route.

The airline is planning further growth initiatives in the region. To date, it has carried more than 2.7 million guests with an average on-time performance of 94% this year. In addition, fastjet has launched a network-wide customer service programme with first steps that include a post-flight satisfaction survey, a significant social media response, time improvements to less than an hour, and additional instruments currently being developed to improve the fastjet experience.

The carrier says it plans to become much closer to its guests and work closely with the travel trade and other role-players to ensure that its affordable travel is matched with high service standards.
