Loving music has always been my life

- SAMEER NAIK

“SOME people are lucky enough to be able to follow their dreams and make a living through a career they are passionate about.

Unfortunately for me, that wasn’t the case. Just like millions of other people in this world, my dream had to take a back-seat. I’m not sad about it, but sometimes I do wish that life could have been a little easier for me and my family so that I could follow my dream.

Music has always been my life, and I’ve been singing since I was a little boy. I’ve always known that singing was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.

If I wasn’t singing at home, I was singing for my church choir. Many people have told me that I have a great voice, so it gave me confidence that I could make it as a singer one day. The plan was to finish school, save some money and pursue a degree in music, and hopefully launch my career from there.

But shortly after finishing school, my mother lost her job. She was a domestic worker and we relied on her to survive.

She was out of a job and there was no money coming through, and so I had to put my dream on pause and find a job. I came to Joburg from my hometown of Klerksdorp and managed to secure a job as a petrol attendant. It was meant to be a short-term fix until things were better at home and until I could save up enough money to pay for my studies. But it wasn’t that easy. I barely made enough money to support myself, yet alone my family. I have been a petrol attendant for the past seven years now, and I have kind of given up on my dream of becoming a professional singer. But that hasn’t stopped me from singing. I’m thankful that I do have a job that allows me to sing while I’m working.

I sing out aloud when I’m filling up someone’s car or checking their tyres.

Sometimes I shock my customers and sing songs in a female voice.

I can sing a Celine Dion song and I can hit the high notes just like she does.

Singing makes me happy and it helps me get through the long hours. Even when I am having a bad day, singing helps me get through the day. Music is informative, music is courageous, and music has always given me hope in life.

Even though I haven’t been able to pursue my dream of becoming a professional singer I am grateful that God has blessed me with a wonderful voice.”
