‘MTV Shuga: Down South’ makes a comeback

ON WEDNESDAY evening MTV Staying Alive Foundation, Unitaid and MTV Base host the global premiere of MTV Shuga: Down South 2 at the Monte Casino II Grande. Many favourites from the first season will return along with new faces.

Set in Braamfonte­in and the fictional township of Zenzele, the series sees its characters grapple with their relationsh­ips, sexual health and the various challenges that come with young adulthood.

Directed by Thishiwe Ziqubu, Vivek Mehta and previous MTV Breaks winner Mlu Godola, the new season also puts a particular focus on toxic masculinit­y, HIV amoung young people and gender-based violence.

Some of the fan favorites to return to the series include Thuso Mbedu, Ayanda Makayi and Samke Makhoba. Other key roles are played by Jezriel Skei, Lerato Walaza,

Jemima Osunde, Jet Novuka, Nqobile Sipamla, Gcina Grace Olifant, Sthandiwe Kgoroge and Winnie Ntshaba.

The show also created a platform for talented newcomers to showcase their talents. The standout of the public auditions was winner, Malibongwe Mdwaba, who was awarded the principal role Kwanele.

Nine other talented young South Africans from this season’s public and online auditions were awarded roles in the series.

Other new characters include Mohale Motaung who stars as the charming Odirile, Mamarumo Marokane who plays sports science student Dineo, and Mamodibe Ramodibe who plays Arabeng.

MTV Shuga: Down South 2 will be broadcast from February 12 on MTV base (Dstv channel 322) at 9.30pm.
