The menu was cutesy, with desserts and drinks in jars and creative play on Brooklyn and New York landmarks, like the “Coney Island” burger the “Park Slopes” milkshakes and a Lady Liberty shake with a wisp of candy floss to resemble the Lady’s burning torch.

My date went for the Coney Island burger (R68). The 100 percent beef patty was duly smashed, meaning the burger is pressed on the griddle to try to get maximum crust meant to lock in flavour and deliver texture. It comes with a fried egg, bacon, cheddar cheese and a few battered onion rings. You can skip the bun and save R5, too, if you’re carb-conscious.

I had nachos (R79), a generous portion of corn chips with spicy hot jalapeño and the usual of cheese sauce, melted cheese, salsa, guacamole and sour cream.

The patty was succulent and the nachos had the balance of crispy and cheesy bits – not too soggy, nor too forlornly ignored in cheesy drenching. So nice, but not wow. Pluses were sauces that came with the burger (though tackily served in plastic takeaway tubs) – one was tomato relish and other a tomato mayo with piquant gherkins.

We also ordered a side of zucchini fries. The spiralised marrow were crumbed and deep fried, our waitress told us.
