SUPPORT RAMAPHOSA

-

AS AN experienced politician I am surprised that (John) Steenhuisen should criticise (Cyril) Ramaphosa for not having spoken out earlier. Given Ramaphosa’s background, which includes his leadership role in the trade union movement, his vital work in drawing up our world class constitution, his close association with Nelson Mandela which nearly resulted in his succeeding him, his successful career as a businessman and, most importantly, his appointment as deputy president, all point to him becoming the natural successor to (President Jacob) Zuma, provided he played his cards right.

Nobody could have predicted the extent to which Zuma has compromised himself and more importantly the country, in his quest for personal reward.

Had Ramaphosa spoken out earlier there is no doubt that he would have been sacked, with no chance of becoming president, and been replaced by someone of Zuma’s choice who would likely have perpetuated his ungodly and destructive agenda.

A strong ANC is still vital in providing peace and stability while we chart our way forward and, provided all political parties adopt a policy of South Africa first, we have a real chance of achieving our goal. In the absence of another suitably qualified successor, we should support Ramaphosa irrespective of our political affiliations.
