Gunning for a Halloween trick or treat

- TANYA WATERWORTH

FIRST there was Freddie, then there was Jason and now Oscar Pistorius could be knocking on your door looking for a treat.

Pistorius hasn’t been given a jail pass, but he has made it into the Sickest Halloween Costume Hall of fame.

For about R470, an Oscar Pistorius costume,

can be yours, complete with knee pads and boot covers that represent his blades. But South African trick or treaters are going to battle to get their hands on an Oscar suit, his after online retail giant, Amazon pulled the costume on Thursday following outrage on social media this week.

Advertised with the phrase “Blade Gunner” as a play on Pistorius’s nickname Blade Runner, the advertised outfit described the costume as likely to “cause some controversy”.

Other “sick” Halloween costumes this year include the Groping Granny and the Pedobear.

At a cost of £26 (R470), the costume included “top, shorts, boot covers and knee pads” which was a sleeveless shirt in the yellow and green South African colours.

The number 2012 on the shirt is the same year Pistorius took part in the Olympics as the first double amputee ever to do so.

A year later the former Paralympian fell from hero to zero when he killed his model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day. In the advert, the Pistorius model is holding a toy gun. And social media was quick to react with a storm of anger. Sick Chirpse described it as “a strong contender for the most offensive Halloween costume for 2017”, while tweets included @jonnylarking: “The Oscar Pistorius costume is TOO FAR, I’m SO Offended” and @ carorich: “That’s criminal.”

Amazon withdrew the Pistorius advert with its spokesperson saying: “All marketplace sellers must follow our selling guidelines and those who don’t will be subject to action including potential removal of their account. The product in question is no longer available.”

And while Amazon pulled the offensive costume, it was still available on eBay last night at a cost of R470. Last night there were 19 Oscar costumes left but don’t even try. The warning in red on the site reads: “Does not ship to South Africa.”
