A NEW Action Aid report, Mining in SA Social Audit Baseline, conducted in 10 mining affected communitie­s, found that only 13% felt there were positive benefits from having mines close to or around the community, such as clinics, roads and employment.

Of the respondent­s, 79% indicated there was no benefit, while 8% believed mines brought negative effects such as “sickness, dispossess­ions and damages”.
