Edenglen High’s rising athlete
THE last year of schooling is tough enough, but try doing your matric and training everyday for athletics, with the goal to make it to the 2024 Olympics.
Henry Emejuru, a learner of Edenglen High, is currently running 10.53 seconds for 100m and 22.57 seconds for 200m.
Coming from a primary school that was more focused on academics than sports, Henry still had a passion for football and played constantly until Grade 9 – where he attained an injury. Henry started taking athletics seriously in Grade 10 after being identified by the principal, Trevor Weinerlein, where he received achievements for his athletics, including full colours for athletics in Grade 10.
Recently, Henry has been training with Akani Simbine (100m Commonwealth champion and former Edenglen High learner) coach Werner Prinsloo and was sponsored with training gear by Simbine.
Henry says one of the challenges – with putting all his time into athletics – is balancing athletics training and school work, with a schedule of 10 hours of training over five days a week. Although juggling school and training, Henry says school comes first. Good Luck, Henry!
