Celebrate Every Day

Think rainbow cakes and red velvet layers, dreamy cream cheese icing and lots of sprinkles, super fresh everything – and always handmade with love. This is The Velvet Cake Co., an irresistibly exciting bakery in the heart of Cape Town.

But first, let’s go back to where it all started. Way back in 2010, a bright and aspiring pâtisserie chef started a little cake shop called Treat, near her home in Cape Town’s northern suburbs. Within just two years, her cakes were so well known that orders outstripped the bakery’s ability to keep up. Spotting a gap that she knew she could fill, Jandri van Zyl opened a commercial bakery in 2012, and The Velvet Cake Co. was born.

With two vibrant stores and an equally exciting online platform offering a wide range of celebration cakes, The Velvet Cake Co. has since established itself as one of the most successful, innovative,

and creative bakeries in the area. But what makes this bakery such a special place? Everything is handmade in their local factory where they bake around the clock. Van Zyl and her team of experienced bakers are involved in every step of the production process, and their mission is to listen to their customers and bake the best-tasting cakes using top-quality ingredients. All of Velvet’s cakes and treats are freshly baked on the day, from their famous cupcakes, convenient cake cups, and various cake slices to every single online cake order – “on the day” means freshness guaranteed.

The next phase for this exciting company is ready to go, and it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to see this lively brand go from strength to strength. The Velvet Cake Co. is taking its sweet reputation and branching out, planning two new stores situated in two of Cape Town’s busiest malls: Canal Walk and Tyger Valley. These stores are set to make that one-stop mall experience a lot sweeter. Van Zyl calls these very first store-fronts in busy mall environments the “ultimate cake-on-the-go”, with customers popping in, grabbing treats, and indulging while they shop.

This cake-on-the-go vision inspired the bakery team to invent an exclusive new treat for the new stores called Velvet Tubs. Velvet Tubs will consist of a range of baked cheesecakes, presented in a handy paper tub with a spoon – something that’s easy to eat while walking around, shopping, and browsing. The Velvet Tubs cheesecake flavours include red velvet, lemon meringue, apple crumble, and caramel. “We want our customers to be able to eat and enjoy our cakes while they walk around in the mall, and that’s how the Velvet Tubs came to be. With a little tub and spoon you’ll be able to walk, eat, and shop. Think of it as eating ice cream from a tub, but instead of ice cream you’re eating freshly baked cheesecake,” Van Zyl says.

What other sweet treats can you expect from their new stores? All the Velvet classics everyone has come to love! Think chocolate, sweetie pie, carrot, red velvet, and vanilla cupcakes, and rainbow and lemon meringue cups. Their best-selling new Slices come in lots of flavours, including red velvet, caramel rainbow, and carrot. Fresh cakes will also be available, perfect for last-minute parties or birthdays, and of course the Velvet Tubs in all the decadent cheesecake flavours. And the best part? Being able to satisfy your cake cravings seven days a week, from morning until night. The layout and design of the new stores will stay true to the happy vibe the Velvet customer loves. Think soft, modern colours, exciting prints, state-of-the-art display fridges filled with those delicious treats, and an eye-catching wall proudly showing off their famous Rainbow Cake.

The Canal Walk branch will open this month, and the Tyger Valley store opens in September.
