CARELSE & WITS PART WAYS FOR NEW DEAL

-

Matthew Carelse is assessing his options following a solid showing in the 2018 edition of the Varsity Football cup.

The 19-year-old was a standout performer for Wits University in this year’s university competition and was largely credited for his team’s success in reaching the final. Now, following the final, the player has parted ways with Bidvest Wits as he plans the next move in his ca- reer.

According to Siya sources, the goalkeeper and The Students have parted ways amicably, with the player firmly focussed on playing first team football. Carelse was part of the Wits youth set-up, though was training with Gavin Hunt’s side regularly and knocking on the first team door.

Siya sources, however, have since revealed why the player decided to leave Wits. According to the sources, Carelse would have to wait in line for competitive first team action. Wits currently have Darren Keet, Brighton Mhlongo and Ricardo Goss available for selection, and have been heavily linked with Ajax Cape Town’s Brandon Petersen.

The player’s camp believe that at his age, Carelse needs to be playing at a high level if he is to create a professional career for himself, and in aiming to work his way through the professional ranks, is targeting first team football.

According to the Siya sources, clubs in the NFD have expressed an interest in his services, and it now remains to be seen if he does hold out for a PSL deal elsewhere or joins a club in the second tier.
