Chiefs to miss out as Mhango is linked to Portugal

-

Kaizer Chiefs could miss out on one of their long-term targets following the news that Bidvest Wits striker, Gabadinho Mhango, could be heading to Portugal.

The 26-year-old Malawian has made just one appearance all season, and it is evident that he has fallen out of favour under the mentorship of coach Gavin Hunt. With his prospects of game-time at the club not looking promising and his contract set to expire in less than one year, Mhango is being linked with a move abroad.

Mhango signed for The Students from Bloemfontein Celtic in January of 2016 and spent six months on loan with Golden Arrows before joining the Braamfontein-based club. However, before signing for Wits, Mhango was heavily linked with Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs.

Having opted to sign for Wits at the time, it had been speculated that the talented striker’s next stop would be Naturena. Indications are that Chiefs’ assistant coach, Patrick Mabedi, has a good relationship with his countryman, and that the Malawian could would have played a part in convincing the player to put pen to paper with the Chiefs.

Now, according to Siya sources in the know, it seems that a few clubs in Portugal have been made aware of the player and are tracking him closely, with the sources indicating that Vitoria Setubal FC is one of the clubs that are keen on him and that the club could step in and make a bid during the January transfer window.

Setubal is the same club that Kermit Erasmus plays for, though he is not the only South African at the club. Kgaogelo Sekgota joined the club last week – however, the 21- year- old midfielder will only be eligible to play for the side in January.

Mhango could be the next African joining the team, as Wits aim to cash in on a transfer fee. The Malawi international will see his contract expire on June 30, and instead of losing him on a free, Wits could cash in on a cut-free price.
