AFCON DREAM HANGING IN THE BALANCE

-

A game of football is won in the middle of the park. Dean Furman and Kamohelo Mokotjo are not on form. In fact, they were not deserving of the call-up. It seems like Furman and Mokotjo are automatic choices for every Bafana Bafana coach. Mokotjo is not playing much in England and Furman gets selected ahead of other players despite his poor current form. Please, Stuart Baxter, select players on merit. Every week, we see good performances from Thabo Nodada and Jabulani Maluleke, just to mention two. Stephen Mpya, Mamphulo village

Bafana Bafana should have won the game against the Seychelles easily as they dominated for large parts of it. In the first half, it was one-way traffic, but we failed to hit the back of the net. Lebo Mothiba had a couple of clear chances, but he left his scoring boots back at FNB Stadium. The Seychelles were defending deep as they didn’t want a repeat of what happened in the first leg and they defended well. They frustrated Bafana and it paid off as our boys rushed their decisions. In the second half, Bafana took their foot off the pedals and the Seychelles woke up from their slumber and launched attacks of their own, which nearly resulted in goals. Our journey will be difficult as we are going to play Libya and Nigeria. Had we won this game, our chances of qualification for the 2019 AFCON were going to be high, but hope springs eternal, I guess. Madimetja Vic Mashamaite, Renstown

I foresee potholes on our road to the 2019 AFCON, even though making it to the destination (Cameroon) is still possible. All it needs is proper planning and determination from both the players and the technical team. In our upcoming game against Nigeria, we mustn’t play with a ‘not to lose’ attitude, but play to win. Also, we mustn’t think that because we beat Nigeria in the first round then it’s given that we are going to do the same with ease. No, we must work hard and plan wisely when choosing players and the venue. Make use of home ground advantage by using the extra player (fans) to motivate the players on the day.
