Sundowns join Chiefs in Dove interest
News reaching the Siya crew is that Mamelodi Sundowns have joined Kaizer Chiefs in the race for Cape Town City defender, Edmilson Dove, though he has also been linked with a move to Europe.
Dove is regarded as one of the best left backs in the PSL and during the July/ August transfer window, it was reported that Chiefs were aiming to add the Mozambique international to their squad.
The Siya crew subsequently revealed in edition 1 086, in “City say no to Chiefs for Dove, Walusimbi next…”, that City were unwilling to part ways with Dove following the exit of both Lyle Lakay and Robyn Johannes.
The Soweto giants did land up signing Godfrey Walusimbi from Kenyan outfit Gor Mahia.
According to Siya sources, Chiefs have not lost interest in the 24-year-old, however, have been joined by their perennial title contenders, in Sundowns. According to the Siya sources, Downs have made enquiries into the player’s availability and could make a move for him next year, ahead of the 2018/19 season.
Downs currently have four options a left back, in Lakay, Mosa Lebusa, Tebogo Langerman and Siyabonga Zulu, though Lebusa has been playing in central defence, with Zulu seemingly not in the club’s plans. Lakay is playing out of his natural position, on the left wing, while Langerman is getting on in age, and will be turning 33 next year.
Dove’s arrival could be seen as a long-term replacement for Langerman, with the veteran defender’s professional career winding down.
The sources added that Dove has also been linked with a move to Portugal or Turkey, and if City boss, John Comitis, does secure a big-money move abroad, he will undoubtedly assess if it does make good business sense.
What is enticing to any suitor is the versatility of playing at left back and at centre back, a position he’s been playing in of late.
