SSU & Wits track Fielies

-

Taariq Fielies is being tracked by two of Gauteng’s PSL giants, with indications that the 26-year-old could be on the move.

Fielies made his break in Mzansi football last season, where alongside Robyn Johannes he formed one of the best central defensive partnerships in the PSL. His form on the field saw him land a new and improved deal, that will see him under contract until 2023, and a call-up to Stuart Baxter’s Bafana Bafana set-up.

Johannes has since left City for Wits, and it seems as though Fielies could be following in his footsteps. According to Siya sources, the central defender is being tracked by both Bidvest Wits and SuperSport United.

Indications are that Wits could make changes to their squad next season, with both Denis Weidlich and Edwin Gyimah’s futures in doubt, and that Fielies has been identified as a possible replacement should the changes take place.

His arrival would see him reunited with Johannes, offering coach Gavin Hunt more options at the back.

Wits, however, is not the only club linked to the player, with indications that Matsatsantsa a Pitori are monitoring his progress. The Tshwane outfit have an aging central defence, commanded by veterans Bongani Khumalo (31), Clayton Daniels (34) and Morgan Gould (35). With all three of the aforementioned players on the wrong side of 30, the club will be looking to rope in replacements that can lead the team in the near future.

As it stands, Fielies is a City player and, while he is under contract, the club will have the last say, though City are seen as a selling club, and at the right price we could see Fielies sporting a new jersey next season.

It remains to be seen if Coach Benni McCarthy will be willing to let the player leave.
