Extend with Chiefs…
Ekstein’s main option, and probably the most likely one at this stage, is to extend his contract with the Glamour Boys.
The reported three-year deal that is being prepared would give him long-term stability as he approaches his 30s, and he would remain with arguably the most popular football team in South Africa.
The downside of staying with Chiefs though, unless things improve, is that he may have to settle with remaining a bit-part player in the Absa Premiership.
Chippa wanted him before…
Chippa United find themselves down at the wrong end of the table after almost a third of the league season, and they may well be back in the hunt for a player like Ekstein who can try and make things happen in the heart of their midfield.
Chippa were interested in signing ‘Pule’ earlier in the year as they looked for more attacking options, though a move never materialised at the time.
Now, with Ekstein’s future uncertain, they could come knocking once again.
The others…
Ekstein is unlikely to be short of options if he does decide to move on from the Glamour Boys, especially given his popular ‘kasi flavour’ style of play.
The likes of SuperSport United and Bidvest Wits would see him as a player that doesn’t suit their style of play – however, teams such as Baroka, Polokwane City and Golden Arrows may all see him as a viable option, adding value to their respective squads.
Meanwhile, Steve Komphela, now with Bloemfontein Celtic, may also want to take another look at him outside of the walls of Naturena. The two have worked together in the past, and could be reunited.
A chance overseas?
A move outside of South Africa is probably the most unlikely option at the moment given the fact that, as he approaches his 28th birthday, he is yet to make a real impact in South Africa.
However, he could opt to make a move to Scandinavia, with South African players being known to perform well in the Scandinavia leagues. An aspect that could hinder this possibility is that it is thought that Ekstein is now representing himself and would not have an agent to spread the word about his abilities overseas.
