Twist in Khune’s Chiefs contract

-

In February last year, Itumeleng Khune, though still a bit vague in his comments, moved to clarify his contract situation at Kaizer Chiefs.

He told reporters at the club’s Naturena base during an open media day that his future was not in doubt following reports that he was yet to be offered a new deal with four months remaining on his initial agreement.

It put the speculation to bed, albeit temporarily – and it was around the same time that a high-ranking official at Chiefs had informed the Siya crew that Khune is contracted with Amakhosi until June of 2022.

But there appears to be a twist.

Two independent Siya sources within the Chiefs technical team have painted a different picture, contradicting what was stated last year. The sources have indicated that the veteran goalkeeper’s contract will expire this year, on June 30, and that he is yet to put pen to paper on a new one that would secure his future.

The two technical team members explained that Khune is one of 10 players awaiting contract decisions at the club.

It is contradicting information from within the same camp, but Chiefs are yet to offer clarity on the matter and speculation continues to build up over what the future possibly holds for a player that has been at the club since he was 12 years old.

Khune has been in and out of the team over the past year, with Ernst Middendorp having preferred Daniel Akpeyi and his successor, Gavin Hunt, undecided between the two goalkeepers since he took over in September last year.

A major squad overhaul is expected at Naturena at the end of the season, and it remains to be seen if Khune will be part of the clear-out or not.
