MARITZBURG TRACKING RAYNERS
The Siya crew has learnt that SuperSport United striker Iqraam Rayners has landed on the radar of Maritzburg United.
The Team of Choice are once again under the tutelage of Fadlu Davids, who rejoined the club where he spent four years, following a shortlived stint in Europe with Russia Premier League giants FC Lokomotiv.
In preparation for the second round of the DStv Premiership, the club has been looking to strengthen their team with experienced campaigners, with former Orlando Pirates defender Wayde Jooste believed to be amongst those set to join.
Now, the latest news reaching the crew’s desk is that Maritzburg have expressed their interest in Rayners.
The 26-year-old is currently on the books of SuperSport, who he joined in 2020 from Stellenbosch FC, and has found himself amongst the regulars at Matsatsantsa, with 11 appearances this campaign.
He has registered five assists so far.
His performances have not gone unnoticed and Maritzburg coach Davids is understood to be a big admirer of the player, with insiders indicating that he is keen on bringing him to KZN, either on loan or on a permanent deal.
Rayners is understood to have entered into the final year of his contract with SuperSport, although the club do have an option to exercise it for a further year.
The stocky star shot to prominence whilst on the books of Stellenbosch when he was crowned the 2019/20 National First Division (now Motsepe Foundation Championship) Golden Boot winner with 19 goals to his name for the Cape Winelands outfit.
However, he has managed just five goals in three seasons at SuperSport since, given his altered role as a wide attacker.
