Rhulani to have big say on Downs technical team
The Siya crew understands that there remain ongoing discussions at Mamelodi Sundowns over how the technical team will be assembled beyond the current season considering the recent changes.
In October last year, the club hierarchy announced Rhulani Mokwena as the sole head coach, demoting his equal Manqoba Mngqithi to senior coach and seemingly elevating Steve Komphela to first-team coach.
But Mokwena has been adamant that these are just titles and the trio continue to work together in harmony since the reshuffle.
According to insiders at Chloorkop, however, it is believed Mokwena will have a big say on who he works with moving forward, considering the fact that Mngqithi is in the final six months of his contract and is likely to leave.
Information gathered by Soccer Laduma indicates that Komphela’s initial agreement following his much talked-about move to Sundowns from Golden Arrows is until June 2023 with an option for the club to extend it further.
Siya sources with knowledge of what goes on behind closed doors at the Tshwane giants have explained that the current situation puts Mokwena in control after management saw it fit to name him as the head coach.
As reported by Soccer Laduma recently, the 35-yearold tactician is himself in the middle of negotiating a new contract and part of the discussions entail Mokwena having to pick his backroom staff, which he is already doing.
Downs parted company with conditioning and goalkeeper coaches, respectively, in Riedoh Berdien and Marcus Mashilo last month.
It remains to be seen who follows them out the door.
