Agent gives update on Morena’s Downs contract

-

Mamelodi Sundowns utility player Thapelo Morena has just six months remaining on his contract, but his agent has confirmed that the club can still trigger an option to keep the Bafana Bafana international on their books.

It’s been nearly seven years since Morena joined the Brazilians from the now-defunct Bloemfontein Celtic, helping them win five league titles in that time as well as several other domestic trophies.

With the five-year deal Morena signed in 2020 broken down into a straight three seasons plus an option to have it extended for a further two,

Downs are yet to confirm what will happen now that the first part of the agreement is due to expire.

“It’s not a secret that Thapelo has six months left (on his deal),” his agent, Basia Michaels of QT Sports, told the Siya crew.

“And yes, there is a two-year option. Furthermore, I can tell you that the timelines are the normal standards in which Sundowns go about their business and professionally so. I have to obviously play my part and wait for their response.”

Indications are that Morena, who remains a regular at Chloorkop under head coach Rhulani Mokwena even though Khuliso Mudau is the first-choice right back, isn’t likely to be allowed to leave in June.

What plays to his advantage as well is that the 29-year-old is versatile and can be used in various formations and positions by the technical team.

“If we are really looking for dates and timelines, then we can expect Sundowns to communicate their intentions before June 30. I don’t see why they wouldn’t keep him, but we work in an industry where we take things as they come,” said Michaels.
