The Siya crew spoke to a toper agent in SA to get their expert understanding on what’s going on. For obvious reasons, the agent will remain anonymous.

“It’s been a topic that has been in the spotlight for many seasons now and I feel that there is two sides to the recruitment. There’s an outsider side where you realise that when a player is doing well at his current club, then there is an interest from

Sundowns a lot of the times. It also happens a lot of the time that the player is then recruited to Sundowns.

“And then there’s the other side of the coin where you look at what it is that Sundowns have set out to do. Their ambitions are to compete on the continent. They want to win the Champions League again and they obviously feel that they need to bolster in certain areas if they want to compete.

“What people on the outside don’t see is the planning. When I say planning, it’s meticulous planning – the analysis and thinking that goes into the recruitment at Sundowns. I mean they do it for every match, so you can imagine how much analysis and planning goes into buying a player. That’s the part that people don’t see on the outside.

“But the point that is being raised by former players and analysts is that this type of recruitment is ruining the league. But players also enter the situation knowing that it’s going to be tough to break into the team.

“The talent pool is phenomenal and that’s purely because of the level they want to compete at. In the past week, they have rotated their team against Sekhukhune United and TS Galaxy, but it was almost a walk in the park in both games without breaking a sweat.”
