Makgopa’s Pirates future to be assessed in January

-

Evidence Makgopa will have his Orlando Pirates future reassessed in January after he could not seal a move away from the club before the end of the recent transfer window in September.

The Siya crew had been informed that the striker was on the wanted list of Chippa United, who were able to sign his teammate Goodman Mosele on loan until the end of the season and pushed to add him on their books too.

Makgopa has only made four appearances from the bench for the Soweto giants since the start of the campaign in what is a continuation of his lack of game-time at the club under Jose Riveiro.

It’s believed there was a plea to allow him to be sent out on a loan spell to a fellow DStv Premiership rival as the forward is also eager to fight his way back into the Bafana Bafana team.

The 23-year-old, a member of the national U23 squad at the Olympic Games in Tokyo two years ago under coach David Notoane, was also part of the first group of players called up by Hugo Broos.

However, due to being on the sidelines, the national team mentor has since moved on and looked to other marksmen to step in as Bafana build up to the

Africa Cup of Nations in January next year.

The transfer window will reopen in three months’ time again and with Makgopa yet to start a game for the Buccaneers so far this season, it is likely Chippa – or any other potential suitor for that matter – will come knocking again.

Swallows not giving up on chasing main sponsor?

Moroka Swallows’ search for a front-of-jersey sponsor continues with chairman David Mogashoa determined to find a backer for one the traditional top clubs in the Premier Soccer League.

The Dube Birds fought their way back to the elite level of SA football three years ago under then coach Brandon Truter and have been in talks with several interested parties to partner up with the brand.

Swallows were close to announcing a deal with Telkom in 2021, but were blocked by the PSL with a few of the issues said to be around conflict of interest with some of the League’s sponsors in the telecom space.

Recently, reports emerged of Hollywoodbets holding discussions with the Swallows boss with a view of coming on board, but Mogashoa publicly denied any conversations with the betting company.

Siya sources have also indicated that Gold Rush, who also offer online betting and other forms of entertainment, were mentioned as an alternative by the Dube Birds – however, nothing has materialised at this stage.

A deal that the Dobsonville-based side have been able to seal and deliver is that of a new technical sponsor in Drip wear, owned by entrepreneur and businessman Lekau Sehoana, and this was well-received by the foot-ball community.

The target now is to nail down a major sponsor to also help alleviate the financial pressure running the club has put on Mogashoa, who often has to top up the R2 million grant from the League with money from his own business.
