Soweto giants join Sundowns in Lakay pursuit

-

In September, the Siya crew reported that Mamelodi Sundowns had eyed Fagrie Lakay as a solution to the club’s injury crisis, and now it seems they have since been joined by the Soweto duo of Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, who have expressed interest in the player.

That the burly forward’s contract with Egyptian Pyramids side is set to expire in June 2024 has put a number of clubs on high alert. So far this season, he has netted two goals in 11 games in all competitions. In contrast, last season he managed 12 goals and four assists in 41 matches from all competitions.

Three months ago, insiders confirmed that the Brazilians were keen on a South African striker, with names such as those of Percy Tau, Khanyisa Mayo and Lakay being bandied about. Now, the latest news is that both Amakhosi and neighbours Bucs have shown interest in the 26-year-old, who will be eligible to talk to any club on a potential pre-contract, as he is about to enter the final six months of his deal with his current side.
