Stephens attracts interest… Chiefs to enquire?

-

Sage Stephens might have made it onto Kaizer Chiefs’ radar as a potential target in the January transfer window, the Siya crew has been told.

The goalkeeper has been growing in stature since grabbing his chance at Stellenbosch FC under coach Steve Barker as the club’s number one and raising his hand as a possible selection for Bafana Bafana, too.

According to reliable sources privy to player movements in the Premier Soccer League, it’s now emerged that Amakhosi have asked questions about whether Stellenbosch would be willing to sell the experienced star.

Stephens joined Stellies in September 2020 from Cape Town City, where he had been an understudy to Peter Leeuwenburg and a few other goalkeepers before he could finally get his chance. He made a switch to Stellies after three years at the Citizens, and the 32-year-old made the most of the opportunity given to him and hasn’t looked back since.

Over the last three seasons or so, the player has cemented his place as a regular under Barker, with this season being no different as he has made 18 appearances so far, keeping nine clean sheets.

Given that he has helped the Cape Winelands outfit to their maiden trophy, it’s no surprise then that, as indicated by Siya sources, the Glamour Boys are believed to have enquired, albeit behind the scenes as it’s thought they are yet to make an official approach to Stellies.

Stephens joins teammate Fawaaz Basadien on that wish-list, with the Soweto giants understood to also be interested in the defender, as reported by Soccer Laduma.
