Al Ahly move for Mokoena ruled out

-

While midfielder Teboho Mokoena continues to be the subject of interest abroad following his performance at the Africa Cup of Nations with Bafana Bafana, the Siya crew understands a potential move to Egypt is unlikely.

It was the player’s agent, Glyn Binkin, who recently confirmed that Al Ahly were among the teams reportedly keen on securing the services of the Mamelodi Sundowns star – but the representative added the decision would be up to the parent club.

Soccer Laduma has been led to believe Ahly have not actually put in a formal bid, but due to what is expected to be a hefty transfer fee as well as the hostility between the two sides over previous dealings, any chance of Mokoena joining the North African giants is off.

Ahly have in the past dealt with Downs when they recruited former coach Pitso Mosimane while he was still under contract.

In 2020, the Red Devils pounced on ‘Jingles’ and appointed him head coach soon after he’d committed to a new deal at Chloorkop, and that did not sit well with Sundowns management.

Mosimane then proceeded to pursue midfielder Gaston Sirino, who became so frustrated that he was trying to force a move away from the club even though the Brazilians were seemingly not willing to sell him.

It’s believed the rivalry that has also developed over the years in the CAF Champions League makes it tricky for the two sides to conduct business together as neither want the other to become stronger by acquiring players from each other.

Mokoena is understood to be on the radar of Bournemouth and Monaco, but Ahly has certainly been ruled out.
