SuperSport United holding out for big Europe offer for Okon?

-

Following their CAF Confederation Cup exit two weeks ago, SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt indicated that the club was on the verge of sending two young players abroad without revealing their names.

The Siya crew has now been led to believe that one of them is teenage defender Ime Okon, who is making his senior team debut this season and has already managed over 20 appearances for the Tshwane outfit.

Okon, who has been noticed by Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos in recent times – but is still eligible to play for Nigeria, is understood to have caught the eye of international scouts, while there’s also talk there could be offers at the end of the campaign.

Asked why SuperSport could not put more of an effort in the Confederation Cup having finished bottom of their group, Hunt then spelled it out that his mandate was to build the future generation at the club.

“My job is to produce players to go to Europe, which we’ve got two going already, but not from this group. That’s what we do. We have to look after our [PSL] franchise because we can’t afford to be out of the top league,” the coach said in part.

Indications are that Okon is being monitored in Portugal, France as well as Belgium and there could potentially be more clubs tracking the 20-year-old.

Soccer Laduma has it on good authority that Okon’s future will become a lot clearer from June onwards when the window is open and SuperSport can listen to any offers, but the likelihood is that Matsatsantsa will hold out for the highest bidder.
